FalconStor RecoverTrac 2.0 |
|
Automated disaster recovery (DR) for physical and virtual environments FalconStor® RecoverTracTM technology represents a significant advancement in data protection, providing automated disaster recovery (DR) of critical business application servers and associated data volumes. This flexible and comprehensive recovery tool supports physical and virtual servers, including mixed environments. Single or multiple recovery locations are supported, as well as local and remote recovery. The challenge of automated recovery Most organizations today rely on multiple applications, departments, server platforms (physical and virtual), networking protocols, storage systems, and IT staffing departments to effectively operate their business. The task of rebuilding this infrastructure at a remote data center is challenging, often with significant revenue loss due to service outage. Many vendors and customers mistakenly believe that having a secondary instance of data constitutes DR. However, replication alone does not fulfill all of these complex recovery requirements, and implementing any level of automation is often costly and prohibitive. True DR, not just replication Resumption of business IT operations after site failure involves more than remote replication of data volumes. True DR entails automatic resumption of servers, storage, and applications. The execution of this seemingly simple concept is daunting in its complexity, involving mapping of every server in the environment, as well as network configurations, data volumes, storage systems, and dependencies. It also entails departmental considerations, conversions or post- process specifics, and the automating framework to execute these recovery jobs automatically. As a standard feature of the FalconStor® Continuous Data Protector (CDP) and FalconStor® Network Storage Server (NSS) solutions, RecoverTrac delivers on each of these requirements, operating in all environments regardless of server, network, application, or storage vendor. RecoverTrac enables users to protect and preserve critical business applications and data, regardless of disaster type. Service-oriented data protection and recovery Everyone expects optimal service levels from their vendors; failure to meet service level agreements (SLAs) has a negative impact on business. With RecoverTrac, users can define and implement specific levels of data protection and availability, from single servers or departments to entire data centers. This facilitates recovery policies based on business requirements, enabling service-oriented data protection. RecoverTrac enables seamless IT operations, regardless of failure type, resulting in satisfied customer expectations and the shifted view of data protection as a business advantage rather than a liability.
Integration with hypervisor servers and centers As most organizations have steadily increased their deployment of virtual servers, automated DR must include integration with hypervisors. RecoverTrac includes designated integrated support for VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V. Intuitive wizards facilitate population and definition of host hypervisor servers and their resident virtual machines at any location. Intuitive mapping and definition of resources A comprehensive management console includes a navigation pane for hosts, clusters, recovery jobs, hypervisor servers and centers, storage servers, and sites. Population of resources into any of these categories can be done manually via intuitive wizards to simplify complex processes. Each resource category can include groups to further simplify management of large and complex environments. Of particular importance is the sites category. RecoverTrac supports multiple sites, either locally within a single data center or geographically distributed. This mapping or resource inventory definition function is a key feature of RecoverTrac. As many organizations have tens, hundreds, or thousands of resources (servers, clusters, data volumes and storage arrays), RecoverTrac enables the systematic definition of all resources in any environment. Customisable recovery jobs Once all resources have been populated into appropriate resource inventories at all sites, recovery jobs can be defined and applied to individual servers, clusters, or groups. Creation of recovery jobs can be performed via intuitive Wizards and include selection of; source and recovery servers, associated storage (boot or data volumes), and pre- or post-process scripting. RecoverTrac supports single or multiple host recovery (consistency groups) to the latest or specific recovery points. Recovery jobs can include physical-to-physical (P2P) on the same hardware, physical-to-virtual (P2V), or virtual-to-virtual (V2V) on the same hypervisor. P2V server conversion can be pre-staged or dynamic. Policies or dependencies are additional levels of flexibility that enable proper execution of recovery jobs appropriate to each business application or data volume.
Automated failover and fail back RecoverTrac can start up defined target hosts (physical or virtual) and applications at the recovery site, attempt to shut down affected hosts at the primary site (should any be operational), and reverse the direction of remote replication (maintaining data protection if the primary data center has storage functionality). Should the primary site failure be host- or server-specific, this dynamic reversal of replication direction is essential for eventual failback to the primary site. As most failures are man-made and short-term in duration, failback is essential for comprehensive, automated DR.
Simplified DR testing RecoverTrac enables non-disruptive testing of recovery jobs. Every aspect of selected recovery jobs can be executed in test mode, without impacting production applications or data volumes. This allows administrators to discover missing servers, improperly configured network settings, or dependencies not readily known or considered. Selection of test mode is simple and intuitive from the management console.
